How Acupuncture Can Help With Postpartum Disorder

There are many forms of postpartum disorder ranging from mild to dangerously severe.  The mildest and most common form of postpartum disorder is often referred to as the "baby blues."
This, more easily overcome, version of the disorder occurs in 40 to 85 percent of all deliveries. Symptoms will suddenly appear during the first ten days after childbirth and they tend to peak and gradually decline after three to five days. Although symptoms are distressing, they do not last long enough to be detrimental to the mother’s health.

Typical symptoms include anxiety, depression, irritability, confusion, crying spells, sleep and appetite disturbances, and a lack of attachment towards your new baby.  Postpartum depression, however, can occur any time within the first year after childbirth, but it is usually within the first four weeks after delivery.  Symptoms must be present for at least two weeks and they must affect the mother's ability to function to be considered postpartum depression.  Regardless if it is severe depression or just the baby blues, acupuncture can help relieve many of the symptoms.

Acupuncture can also help a new mother deal with the stress and lack of sleep a new born child brings into a home.  Getting an adequate amount of sleep will give you renewed energy during the day and it will give your mind a chance to shut down at night, so that you can relax in the evening once your baby is finally sleeping.  Being able to gain a few hours of peaceful sleep when you have a newborn is priceless and acupuncture has been proven to help patients get a good night’s rest.

Acupuncture after child birth will also help to restore the mother’s body back into optimal health.  Giving birth and caring for a child is not only mentally and emotionally draining, it is also physically exhausting and can rob your body of the good health it needs to function at its best.  Postpartum depression is sometimes made worse because the mother feels drained and she can’t seem to find the energy that she desperately needs to care for her newborn child.

Acupuncture will give the new mom the boost she needs by rejuvenating and renewing her physical health, so she can focus more on her emotional and mental wellbeing.  That is why acupuncture is such a wonderful solution.  It has the diverse capabilities of addressing all the issues that are causing deficiencies within your body and it addresses the emotional strain of postpartum depression.

Depression, especially postpartum depression, can be debilitating and it can take you away from what really matters.  Your focus needs to be on your family and your newborn baby, so there is no time to wait and simply hope it will get easier.  Fortunately, regular visits with your acupuncturist can help you take back control over your life.
