The
concept of ensuring adequate rest to women in order to completely recover from
childbirth and pregnancy is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine.
It considers the idea that it will take women at least a month to fully recover from the physical and mentally draining effects of labor. It is not an idea that is necessarily popular in Western society, but every new mother understands its importance.

Usually
partners or close relatives will make an effort to be around to help out after
the birth for a week or two weeks, if the woman is really lucky. Then
most women are expected to go back to normal with the new responsibility of a
child to add to their usual responsibilities. You may be optimistic that you
will be physically fit and ready for action within a week or two following
giving birth, but that is not the reality for most women. While most will
certainly find a way to cope in the beginning within several months of over
taxing themselves, they will find it hard to shake off their exhaustion and
frustration in the long run.
While
30 days (or even 100 days in some of the Chinese texts) of recovery time might
initially sound like it is an excessive amount of time to some people, it is in
reality a reasonable expectation considering what you have just put your body
through. Think about not only how draining the birthing is on the mother,
but also the total experience of being pregnant for nine months. There is no
way a mother can afford or needs complete bed rest but rather a time where
physical rest is taken at every opportunity available. Light exercise is
appropriate to start rebuilding the body and there needs to be a greater
attention on consuming a healthy diet.
New
mother’s need to focus on rebuilding their blood and energy levels which are
both known to improve with acupuncture. Ideally acupuncture treatments
should be given at least once a week starting from the second week after labor
in order to promote stamina and an efficient recovery. Acupuncture can also be
useful at this time to balance emotions, aid perineal healing and help with any
breastfeeding problems. The next two chapters will explain its benefits
on postpartum disorder and how it can assist with breast feeding.
